PayPal partners with OpenAI for ChatGPT payments integration

PayPal (PYPL) soared nearly 15% in premarket trading after revealing a major strategic partnership with OpenAI, allowing users to instantly check out within ChatGPT using their PayPal accounts.

According to reports, the deal — finalized over the weekend — will roll out next year and connect tens of millions of merchants with OpenAI’s platform.
This integration will make PayPal the first payments wallet embedded directly inside ChatGPT, according to CNBC.

In the company’s press release, PayPal CEO Alex Chriss said:

“By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases.”

Deal details and future plans

The partnership will go live in 2026, enabling businesses and independent sellers to integrate their stores with ChatGPT.
The collaboration will expand PayPal’s reach to millions of AI users and bolster its presence in conversational commerce.
As part of the deal, PayPal will also deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce of nearly 25,000 employees, enhancing productivity with OpenAI’s enterprise tools and APIs.

Despite the jump, PayPal stock remains down roughly 10% year-to-date, signaling that investors see the OpenAI collaboration as a potential turnaround catalyst.
