IonQ Sets New Quantum Computing Benchmark

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) rose in early Tuesday trading after the company published two technical papers claiming a 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a new global performance record in the quantum computing industry.

This milestone surpasses the previous record of 99.97%, held by Oxford Ionics, which IonQ acquired earlier this year.
While the numerical difference seems small, it marks a leap from 3 errors per 10,000 operations to just 1 error per 10,000 operations — a crucial step toward reliable, fault-tolerant quantum systems.

Crossing the “Four-Nines” Barrier

IonQ emphasized that it is the first and only quantum computing company to cross the “four-nines” threshold, a level long considered the holy grail of quantum accuracy.
The company said this achievement places it firmly on track to scale to millions of qubits by 2030.

“This level of quantum performance has been the industry’s north star for decades,”
said CEO Niccolo de Masi.
“Crossing it brings fault-tolerant quantum systems years closer to mass market adoption and dramatically lowers the cost and complexity of large-scale systems.”
