Enbridge Reaches Final Investment Decision on $1.4B Mainline Optimization Project

Enbridge (ENB) announced that it has reached a final investment decision on the Mainline Optimization Phase 1 (MLO1) project, a major capacity expansion designed to support rising customer demand across its North American oil pipeline system.

Project Overview and Key Additions

Total project cost: US$1.4 billion
Expected in-service date: 2027
Capacity additions:
• 150,000 bbl/day added to the Mainline system through upstream optimizations and terminal upgrades
• 100,000 bbl/day added to the Flanagan South pipeline via new pump stations and expanded terminal capabilities

Mainline Achieves Record Throughput

The Mainline pipeline network, which can move up to 3 million bbl/day of crude from Western Canada to Eastern Canada and the U.S. Midwest,
Averaged a record 3.1 million bbl/day in Q3, reflecting continued growth in production and demand for transportation capacity.

Strategic Importance of MLO1

Colin Gruending, Enbridge’s president of liquids pipelines, said the project will support Canadian crude production while providing greater access to top refining hubs in North America.

According to Gruending:

MLO1 will deliver capital-efficient, timely egress capacity
It will enhance connectivity to the most attractive refining markets
The expansion strengthens Enbridge’s position as a critical North American energy infrastructure provider
